About the Programs

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say
any other way – things I had no words for.”
–Georgia O’Keeffe

Self Discovery Through Art has two Premier Group Programs:

  • Option I –  Cognitive Behavior Therapy with Art
This program uses as its base the 16 cognitive distortion’s. This program is for adults 18 and over who wish to enhance their communication and interpersonal relationships. It can be used as preventive as well as corrective therapy. The lessons have a lasting effect when negative and defeating self talk can be reframed through flexible ways of thinking followed by a personal visual expression of this new thinking. This program teaches participants about unhealthy thinking patterns and how to identify these in themselves or in others with a prescription for positive change.
  • Option II – Recovery, Resilience & ReCreation With Art
This program teaches the 10 resilient factors plus Resilience Skills awareness to adults seeking to meet personal challenges with courage and despite the odds flourish and become “thrivers” by strengthening their resilience and gathering support from community. The program focuses on the concepts of Recovery from loss, Resilience as a bridge from loss to ReCreation of a life worth living. These concepts are brought to life visually during the session using structured studio art that engages the thoughts, feelings, senses and imaginations of the participants to provide a hands-on art experience and immediate feedback to anchor these concepts and skills within the participant.

Generally our programs includes 11, two hour sessions meeting once a week. We have space for 10-15 adult participants in each program, no fewer than eight.  Art materials are supplied.  No art background is needed.  Participants use a variety of materials, to make individual and group art, both 2D and 3D reflecting the program’s concepts and skills. We enjoy working with established community groups as well as others, generally we work in an environment with tables, chairs and a water source for cleanup. Two trained facilitators who demonstrate CBT and art competency will implement the program.
